"The purpose of war is not to kill, but to die."

The purpose of warfare is not to kill, but to cause people to die. When soldiers die, this creates the opportunity for nation-states to build memorials honoring the dead.

The deaths of soldiers as well as memorials built to honor these dead soldiers proves the existence of one's nation-state and constitutes a demonstration--showing
everyone how devoted people are to their nation-state.
