A central question: How do collective forms of violence (murder, etc.) become "moral?' In ordinary life when an individual kills another individual, it's a big deal; a gigantic event; HEADLINE NEWS.

Yet massive forms of violence in the societal domain are conceived as "normal" and taken for granted: warfare, genocide, acts of terror, etc. Why is this the case?

Because collective or massive forms of killing are undertaken in the name of SACRED OBJECTS.

A sacred object transforms actions ordinarily conceived as immoral--into moral acts. We are dealing with a "law" because sacred objects that drive collective forms of violence are fungible. You might call the sacred object Germany, or Japan, or Allah, or America, it really doesn't matter at all. The law or dynamic is the same. In our heart the dream (nightmare) remains the same.

The words are interchangeable because each refers to an object in the name of which killing and other forms of massive violence are considered justifiable, indeed righteous.

What are these "sacred objects?" We really don't know. The historians write massive books taking these objects for granted as if they constitute "explanations," explanations which explain nothing at all.

Pearl Harbor occurred in the name of "Japan." The Holocaust occurred in the name of "Germany." 9/11 occurred in the name of "Allah." All mean the same thing, but we don't know what these objects mean.
