Three of the most exciting thinkers in today's world engaged in an animated discussion on the sources of human or societal violence. A main theme emerged--that violence--ostensibly a form of "male aggression"--is generated by a desire for masochistic submission; to placate objects conceived as larger, more powerful, and more significant than human beings.

Koenigsberg stated that humankind values war as an opportunity to sacrifice for something greater than the self. The violence of warfare is masochistic submission. Humans submit to SACRED OBJECTS which endow life with meaning.

Invoking Horace, “It is sweet and honorable to die for one’s country,” Koenigsberg suggests that the sacrificial ideology of war is the “core of Western civilization.”

When societies wage war, there is something for which people kill and die—a SACRED OBJECT,

For Hitler it was Germany, for Aztecs the Sun God for martyrs in the Middle East, Allah. Sacrificial death establishes the reality of the object for which sacrifices are made.
