Putin on the relationship between Crimea and Ukraine to Russia: an infantile fantasy enacted in reality. Putin declares: "We will never give up our love for the motherland." 

Politics is the location that permits infantile desires to be enacted in grandiose ways: the arena in which regressive phantasies are occur. The level of monstrosity is inversely correlated with the power of the regressive phantasy. The pathos of this wish (see the sadness in Putin's face): the longing to re-unite with the phantasy of an omnipotent mother--generates gigantic and grotesque displays of masculinity and violence.
