SUFFERING AND DYING AT THE FRONT/
SUFFERING AND DYING AT AUSCHWITZ

RECOLLECTED IN TRANQUILITY:: TOWARD THE FINAL SOLUTION

A sign at the entrance to Auschwitz read, “I bid you welcome. This is not a holiday resort but a labor camp. Just as our soldiers risk their lives at the front, you will have to work for the welfare of a new Europe.”
Just as German soldiers were suffering and dying at the front, so Jews would be required to suffer and die at Auschwitz: to undergo an even more horrible ordeal.
The Nazis understood the analogy I have presented here: the suffering and death of German soldiers and the suffering and death of Jews were two sides of the same coin: as soldiers were suffering and dying at the front, so Jews would suffer and die at Auschwitz.
