RECOLLECTED IN TRANQUILITY:: TOWARD THE FINAL SOLUTION

The drama of Nazism and the Holocaust was the enactment of a fantasy of omnipotence. Hitler and the Nazis imagined and tried to forge Germany into an entity or body politic not subject to death and decay.

If the Jewish force of death could be removed from within the nation, Hitler imagined, then the body politic could live forever.

In spite of his prodigious efforts, however, Hitler could not escape the feeling that Germany was in a process of dissolution or disintegration. The German body could not be transformed into a body unlike all other bodies.
