"The Pleasure of Killing One's Own People"

RECOLLECTED IN TRANQUILITY:: TOWARD THE FINAL SOLUTION

The When UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar realized Saddam Hussein would not withdraw troops from Kuwait, he declared: “I cannot imagine that someone wants war for the pleasure of killing his own people.”
One has to stretch one's imagination to realize that nations go to war for the please of killing their own people." However, this is my conclusion after forty years of research. Maybe "pleasure" is not the best term. One may say that a nation (and its people) are pleased or gratified or satisfied to know that young men are willing to sacrifice their lives for their country.
