MASS PSYCHOSIS

Richard Koenigsberg

SHARED PSYCHOTIC DELUSION

One might say that the Nazis were suffering from a paranoid psychosis. However, when many people within a society share and embrace a particular delusion, we have not--in the past--called this psychosis. Strange, incredible events are simply understood as anomalous forms of "history."

In the United States today we are witnessing a society living in the throes of a psychotic delusion. Reporters rant and rave, using words like "crazy" and "insane," but they rarely if ever use the word PSYCHOTIC.

Psychiatrists do not argue with patients who have psychotic delusions. Yet this is American society today: dominated by psychotic ideas, on the one hand, and people endlessly fighting against, arguing and debating with these psychotic delusions.

PLEASE CLICK THIS LINK to view the brilliantly produced, animated "cartoon" (and scroll down to see the image introducing the production) which argues that we are living within a "mass psychosis," a society dominated by an "epidemic of madness" that has "lost touch with reality" and "descended into delusions."

For years I have been writing about collective psychosis, shared phantasy, societal delusions. Now, it seems my "dream" is beginning to come true, this perhaps irrational expectation that it is possible to recognizing and analyze "the truth." I thank AFTER SCHOOL.

PS: The concept of the "reality principle" now requires radical revision, but this is a story for another day.
