JEWS SYMBOLIZED HITLER'S OWN DESIRE FOR SEPARATION FROM THE GERMAN COMMUNITY
"Human beings exist in a dialectic between the desire to participate in a community and the wish to separate from this community. Hopefully, we achieve a balance. existing in a space between connection to others and individuality.
"Hitler refused to embrace this dialectic of union and separateness. There could be only the community. He did not allow space for the separate individual; refused to acknowledge that a human being could exist if not bound to the Volksgemeinschaft. Jews symbolized a people who were incapable or refused to bind with a community. The idea of separateness tormented and enraged Hitler.
"The final solution to his problem was—extermination.
Jews were rounded up from throughout Europe, brought to the camps, herded into gas chambers and killed, then dragged
from the gas chambers to incinerators and burned. This was the sad, pathetic ritual that we call the Holocaust, a term meaning 'burnt offering'."
