WHAT ARE COUNTRIES?
(The Desire not to Know)
All these gigantic history tomes.  At the core of these tombs are "countries:" the main characters.  Yet we don't know what countries are. We don't know why people die for them. We don't know why people are allowed to kill in their name. We are like physicists within an atom--with all these electrons swirling about. But not aware of the nucleus at the center of the atom.

Living in the heart of a storm that threatens to destroy the planet, yet knowing nothing about what the storm is, the nature of that "thing" that threatens to destroy us.

Living in a dream. Pretending to know, yet knowing nothing.  It's not the "evil leader," it's the country he represents. Without "Germany," Hitler is a beggar. Without "America," Trump is a clown. With "Russia," Putin is a creepy little man.

The desire not to know--at the heart of human existence.
