WARFARE AS COUNTERPHOBIC DEFENSE AGAINST THE DEATH  DRIVE

The slogan of the SS-man was "obedience unto death." This is a precise description the fate of the Holocaust victim.

Hitler expected every German to be willing to die for the country. He imagined that Jews were a people incapable of making such a sacrifice.

"DIE OR WE WILL KILL YOU." This statement encompasses the history of Nazism. Either die a "noble" death for one's country. Or if you are unwilling to die for a country (the meaning of the term "Jew" for Hitler), then we will kill you.

Or as Goebbels put it: You will die a "glorious, noble death" or you will die an inglorious, ugly death. Take your pick.

Hitler and Goebbels were SO COMMITTED to the idea of sacrificial death. Finally, as Joni Mitchell put it, it comes down to you: Hitler committed suicide and killed his wife.

Goebbels killed himself, his wife, and his six beautiful children.

As Professor Robert Samuels points out, it all begins with the death drive. The ending is contained within the beginning.

You might say that warfare itself is a defense against the death drive: "Revolution as a struggle against passivity," as I put it in my book The Psychoanalysis of Racism, Revolution and Nationalism. Warfare is a counterphobic defense against the death wish, male "aggression" as a defense against the wish to die.
