The term martyr derives from the Arabic word "shahid," meaning witness. The martyr bears witness to his love for Allah (or any other sacred idea) by killing infidels (non-believers). As the martyr submits to the will of god by sacrificing his own life, so does he compel others to submit to the will of his god by sacrificing their lives.
