When an American dropped a 500-pound bomb in Iraq, he was dropping the bomb in the name of "freedom and democracy." The bomb contained the ideal. This is why a man in the air force could drop the bomb and kill people without excessive guilt. He was doing so in the name of his country, which served as his super-ego. He was not a war criminal or a psychopath. The sacred ideal justified killing and taking human lives.
