MONSTERS FROM THE ID:
RETURN OF THE REPRESSED

A succinct summary of one of my theories. The external world is constituted by the projection of unconscious phantasies. In this scene, the Monster is attacking from without. Closing in on Morbius and the space travelers.

Morbius doesn't realize that he has created the monster. Connecting his brain to a powerful machine, his thoughts have been magnified a hundred-fold; projected into an entity in the outside world. The monster returns to assault and kill with murderous rage.

Morbius has no idea that the monster is his own creation: the projection of his own desire; his own lustful rage; the return of the repressed.

This is what culture is (war, genocide, etc.): Our own unconscious desires externalized into the external world. We pretend that war and genocide are not us. It's all coming from "out there" or "up above:" Denial that we are the source.

The most "sophisticated" thinkers are trapped in this denial: the "cultural determinists," not to mention Foucault and Lacan. It's not us. It's all been "imposed" upon us from "out there:" the discourse made us do it.

According to Koenigsberg, what is "out there"...is us. We disavow the inner source of the world that we have created: repress the source.

However, then what is "out there" returns to destroy us: the monster from the id. We refuse to acknowledge that we are the monster.
