Nationalism relocates one's body into a body politic. Mark Neocleous: "Because territory is imagined in corporeal terms, the state seeks to secure its borders—its orifices and entry points—from infiltration and penetration."
Like human bodies, nations are imagined possessing boundaries delineating self from not self--defending against entities seeking to penetrate and contaminate the body politic.
Immigrants may be conceived or experienced as invaders—creeping through porous boundaries—threatening to destroy a vulnerable self. National policy from 2016 to 2020--grew out of an immunological or psychosomatic fantasy.
"External" reality became the place--a location--in which a phantasy was experienced or enacted. National life became a collective dream or nightmare: Americans are still living within this nightmare. It's a national disease that the APA handbook doesn't mention.
Of course, while Americans have been suffering from the phantasy of human beings as pathogenic organisms, simultaneously of course there have been real pathogenic organisms within the body politic, that is, within the actual bodies of millions of Americans (nearly 35 million, believe it or not, according to a recent count).
What is the psychic relationship between the phantasy of pathogenic organisms within the body politic and the reality of pathogenic organisms within the body politic.
Too tough for me to figure out. I'll leave this one for you.
Best regards,
Richard Koenigsberg
