PATHOGENIC OBJECTS INSIDE THE BODY
PATHOGENIC OBJECTS INSIDE THE SELF
PATHOGENIC OBJECTS INSIDE THE NATION

Oswald Mosley was an English politician, leader of the British Union of Fascists from 1932 to 1940 and of its successor, the Union Movement, from 1948 until his death. These groups were known for distributing anti-Semitic propaganda, conducting hostile demonstrations in the Jewish sections of East London, and wearing Nazi-style uniforms and insignia.

Colin Holmes discusses Mosley in Anti-Semitism in British Society: 1876-1939. (2015). He cites the following passage from The Blackshirt, the official newspaper of Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists (BUF) from 1933 until 1936.

Anti-Semitism is intrinsically a normal reaction to the anti-social activities habitually practiced by the alien.  Exactly as the human blood stream, infected by a poisonous bacillus, responds by mustering devourers to attack and eliminate the invader, so does a race conscious community at once mobilize its forces to fight the alien influences which instinct teaches would imperil its very existence. (July 31, 1937)

Here we perceive an immunological fantasy nearly identical to the one put forth by Hitler and the Nazis. The Jew is described as a "poisonous bacillus" within the bloodstream of the British nation. Mosely states that anti-Semitism is a "normal reaction," the body responding "exactly as a human blood stream does" when infected. The body responds by "mustering devourers to attack and eliminate the invader."

In a similar way, Holmes says, a race-conscious nation or community "mobilizes its forces to fight the alien influences which instinct teaches would imperil its very existence."

What do these metaphors mean? I hypothesize that Mosely is projecting an experience occurring within his own mind or body into the external world. The personal becomes the political. It begins with an internal psycho-biological processes.

Dr. Ronald Glaser states (2012) that the the theory of immunization depends "first and foremost on the ability of one cell to recognize a cell which is unlike itself." Individual recognition precedes individual destruction. "Once a cell had identified another as 'foreign,' as being different, the attack begins."

Precisely how does a biological process transform into a nationalistic ideology? This does not occur magically. There must be an intervening variable: a psychological process.

Somehow, an "other" gets embedded within the self and is experienced in a toxic way--leading to the desire to "eject" this internalized object from within the matrix of the self. This internal object acts as if a pathogenic or disease-generating entity.

Psychoanalysts have terms for destructive objects that become embedded within the self--such as "malignant introject." This is a story for another time.
