(2) It's not just "teddy-bears" that are transitional objects. Flags are transitional objects. In fact, culture itself (the "symbolic order") is a transitional object. (3) One's relationship with one's nation/the flag is a SYMBIOTIC ONE. "Hitler is Germany, just as Germany is Hitler." (4) Symbiosis is not an "infantile stage of development." It's the essence of politics. (5) The symbiotic relationship with one's country/flag/mother--is the source of atrocities. People can do nearly anything in the name of their country/mother. Mommy would have wanted it that way: to prove your love and devotion. |
