Political Ideas have a psychosomatic presence within the body. The "immune response" is like an allergic response: the body struggling to REJECT OR EJECT OR PUSH AWAY OR WARD OFF PSYCHOSOMATICALLY EXPERIENCED IDEAS.
One can call the immune response "paranoid rage" on the personal level or "national defense" on the level of international politics. The fact that such violent responses occur suggests that the "other" or "enemy" is experienced as if inside one’s body.
If the enemy was not experienced as inside the body, such an intense response would not be generated. People wage these battles by projecting internal conflicts outward, thus human beings are certain these political struggles are REAL. The reality of the struggles (the fact that we invest in them so deeply) reflects the fact that we have projected inner struggles outward. Or perhaps more precisely, the outer struggle is the inner struggle—since the inner has disappeared when everything manifests as an outer struggle.
Hitler waged war against “the Jew.” The Jew was inside Hitler. But it didn’t matter after a certain point. The “Jew” became a substitute for an object within Hitler’s psyche. So the real struggle became the outer struggle. Hitler sought to save his body and soul by killing Jews.
There is nothing hidden about Hitler: everything he was, he projected into the political arena. There are no secrets. All one needs to do is to analyze his rhetoric. His public persona was who he was. I have looked at the images and metaphors that Hitler projected into his political ideology. This is what Hitler was, nothing more or less: the fantasies he projected and enacted in the political arena. He did this in a massive, extraordinary way.
What is the nature of those inner struggles that we project into politics? People do battle against something foreign—"the other” experienced as if inside one’s body. Call this inner other a Mexican or a Jew or a communist or an immigrant or a capitalist or a landlord, it doesn’t matter. These “others” are experienced as if invading one’s own body and must be destroyed. Internal tormentors and external tormentors are not separate. Genocide and war are psychosomatic phenomena.
The "immune response" is the body's struggle to get rid of pathogens within the body that create illness and suffering. People project the experience of pathogens into an the enemy, and then try to kill the enemy (the pathogenic organism projected outward). It feels like it’s all happening out there. It feels natural to everyone; so normal. It feels normal because we project our bodies into abstract entities that seem to exist outside the self: immortal containers such as nations or gods.
Paranoia = immune response: Fighting to destroy the "not self" idea experienced as part of one's body. Something inside the body that is alien to the self, attacking the self.
The "parasite" idea suggests that the object inside your self is felt to be threatening one's life, draining one's life away. The parasite is the quest for paradise or immortality. in Hitler's case, this meant that all of his energy was devoted to Germany, an "omnipotent" entity which would "live on" in time.
For Hitler, the Jew was a parasite: the negative experience of Germany, which also consumed the idea of the nation because now you experience the nation in a negative form. PARASITE AND DEVOTION MEAN THE SAME THING: the thing to which you are devoted (one’s nation, e. g., Germany) is also parasitic on the self. Rage at the parasite occurs when one begins to perceive the negative dimension of that to which one is devoted; when you realize the nation requires sacrificing one's actual existence.
Nationalism grows out of projection of the body into the outer world. The entire nation is experienced as if it were within one's body. The "enemy" is experienced as if within one's body. The Jew is experienced within Hitler’s body. The immigrant of Mexican is experienced within Trump’s body. If the Jew were not experienced within Hitler’s body, the idea of “the Jew” would be meaningless. If the immigrant or Mexican were not experienced within Trump’s body, he would not get so excited. The object outside represents an inner threat.
My central objective is to convey this theory of metaphor and the body politic: To show how metaphors reveal the central fantasies that define political ideology. Fantasies about the body are projected outward, creating war and genocide. War and genocide are psychosomatic phenomenon. The fantasy of the body politic is revealed through metaphors contained within ideology. Metaphors reveal the shared unconscious fantasies that are the source of ideologies.
My main contribution to humanity will be to show how bodily fantasies are projected into nations, creating war and genocide.
The body politic is a double of the self (the King's second body): Both genocide (purification) and war (sacrifice) follow from this dream of preserving an immortal body with which the self has become identified. War and genocide derive from bodily fantasies.
Political ideology is a projection of bodily experience. Nationalism constitutes the relocation of the self: From body to body politic (we need the connection to the omnipotent body so desperately). Killing and dying occur in order to express faith in the reality of these omnipotent bodies. War and genocide are blood sacrifices made in the name of these gods, testifying to their existing, creating their reality.
